A new documentary film about Go

“The Surrounding Game” is a full-length documentary film in development which will chronicle the growth of the Go in the United States, the intensity and scale of Go in Asia, and the cultural significance of this timeless game.

Will Lockhart and Cole Pruitt are directing “The Surrounding Game” after witnessing the challenge of bringing Go to public awareness and witnessing the longtime frustration of the Go community’s most dedicated organizers. They embarked on this ambitious project as a new way to share the beauty of Go with a diverse audience. Their dream is that this film will provide the general public a real chance to explore firsthand how incredible Go is.

They started filming several months ago and have received overwhelming support from both the film and Go communities. They launched a crowd-funding campaign through Kickstarter and were thrilled and humbled to reach their $15,000 goal in only six days. While they’ll be filming at the US Go Congress, Pro certification tournament, and International Go Symposium, they’ll also be traveling to China and Korea to film international title tournaments and the cultural legacy of Go in Asia. They want you to know that this isn’t just a ‘promotional film’ – it’s about the narrative of Go, the people it inspires, and the unique place that Go has among cultures and communities.
